I Need to Be Honest With You About Gifts

A Letter From Our Founder
I need to be honest with you about something.
We sell gifts for a living. Handcrafted, engraved, shipped to homes across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Switzerland.
But most gifts — including some we have helped people buy — do not truly matter.
And I think you deserve to know why.
"I need to be honest with you about gifts — including the ones we have made."
The Founder, Aladean
I have been making gifts for a long time. I have watched thousands of orders leave our hands — wrapped, engraved, packed carefully, sent across oceans and borders to people who matter to someone, somewhere in the world.
And I have come to understand something that most gift companies will never say out loud: there are three kinds of gifts in this world. Two of them are, at best, forgettable. And one of them — just one — can change the way a person understands how loved they are.
I want to walk you through all three. Honestly. Because I believe that if you understand the difference, you will never give the wrong kind again.
The Duty Gift
I have given these. You have given these. Let us not pretend otherwise.
The Duty Gift arrives because the calendar demanded it. A wedding you attended in Edinburgh, a birthday you could not politely ignore in Toronto, a Christmas exchange that appeared in your company Slack with a £20 limit and mild dread. You did not choose to give out of love. The occasion chose you.
The receiver knows. They always know. Not consciously, not in a way they would ever say aloud — but somewhere beneath the thank-you and the smile, they feel the texture of obligation dressed as warmth. They unwrap it. They say the right things. They set it down. Within weeks, sometimes days, it has disappeared into the quiet background of their home.
I am not judging this. Life is full of obligation. But I want you to see it clearly for what it is — because clarity is the first step toward something better.
Obligation fills the moment. It never fills the heart.
When you are ready to give something real — we engrave it in 40+ languages and ship it to your door.
Give Something That Actually Means SomethingThe Duty Gift is the same in every language and every country. The hollow scented candle in Germany. The generic wine set in California. The impersonal gift card in Melbourne. The branded chocolate box in Geneva. Different wrapping. Same emptiness inside.
We do not make Duty Gifts at Aladean. But I know some of our orders have been used that way — chosen quickly, without much thought, because we were convenient. That is honest. I would rather tell you than pretend otherwise. And I would rather you come back with intention next time.
The Investment Gift
This one is more complex. And, I will admit, it is where most of our corporate orders live.
The Investment Gift is given with genuine care and real thought. But underneath the thought there is a return being sought — a client to be won, a deal to be sealed, a name to be remembered in the right room. There is nothing shameful about this. The world runs on relationships. Strategic generosity is real generosity. We help people do it beautifully — from the boardrooms of Frankfurt to the client dinners of New York, from the partnership meetings of Zurich to the corporate gifting seasons of Sydney and Toronto.
An engraved compass on a desk in Milan. A personalised chalice presented at a deal-closing dinner in London. A brass telescope with a vision-driven quote gifted to a CEO in Stockholm. We make all of these. We make them well. And they work.
Be the gift they remember when the meeting is over.
Engraved in English, Deutsch, Français, Italiano, Norsk, Svenska — and 40+ languages. Shipped worldwide.
Shop Corporate Engraved GiftsBut here is what I have noticed after years of watching these orders: when the relationship that generated the gift ends — when the contract concludes, when the partnership dissolves, when the professional season passes — the object tends to disappear. It slides into a drawer or a storage box. Its meaning was borrowed from a context that no longer exists.
We will take your Investment Gift order. We will make it exceptional. But I will always quietly hope that one day, you come back to us for a different reason entirely.
From New York to Zurich. From London to Oslo. From Sydney to Milan.
Handcrafted gifts that make the right impression, in every language, on every desk.

This is why Aladean exists. This is the only gift that truly matters. And this is what I lie awake thinking about.
Here is what I have come to believe after all of this: every great gift is a letter the giver did not know how to write.
Not a card. Not a note. A letter — the kind you have composed in your head a hundred times but never actually sent. The one that says: You changed me. You saved me. I would not be who I am without you. I am afraid of how much I love you. I am afraid of how little time we have. I want you to carry something of me when I am not there.
Most people never send that letter. Not because they do not feel it — but because they do not know how to begin. Because words on a page feel too exposed, too raw, too permanent in the wrong way.
So instead, they choose something to hold. Something to carry. Something engraved with just enough words to open the door to everything they could not say out loud.
The Letter You Never Sent
Start with a name. Just one name.
The person who came to mind just now — that is who we are here for. Tell us what you wish you had said. We will engrave it in their language, on something that will outlast you both.
Create Your Gift →A mother in the north of England choosing an engraving for her son before he flies to university — three weeks of rewriting the same six words until they were finally right. A grandfather in rural Norway, 74 years old, wanting his values to survive him — one line, pressed into the side of a Viking horn, passed to a grandson who will one day read it to his own children. A husband in Colorado who never found the words for 31 years — until he found four lines for a sundial, and placed it in the garden where it will stand long after they are both gone.
These are the orders I think about when I wonder if any of this matters.
It matters. It matters completely.
Some words are worth engraving in metal.
We ship to the USA, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland — engraved in your words, in your language, built to outlast us all.
Explore Gifts That Last GenerationsI do not know who came to mind when you read that. A parent. A child. A partner. A friend who was there during a year you do not talk about much. A grandparent who is still here, or who is not anymore but whose words still live somewhere in the way you move through the world.
But I know they came to mind. And I know the letter you have been meaning to send them.
You do not have to write it. You just have to engrave it. We will handle everything else — the craft, the metal, the distance between your door and theirs. Whether they are in the same city or across an ocean.
